HLS Letters
Letter to Cornelia and Lewis, from Harvard, 1-20-47; about 6 months before getting married (?):". . . Carol's and my relationship remains in its somewhat variable state. We both know that we like to be with each other and this vacation (furlough) to vacation (furlough) life seems awfully inefficient. But marriage seems like an awfully permanent step. On the other hand, the step seems smaller all the time. In fact, I was making plans for my children's education the other night. It probably is customary to choose a profession or at least figure out what kind of a job one will get before planning about children. I haven't done much along that line, however. I am just plodding along in math, looking a little enviously over at literature, philosophy, and economics. I imagine many men's professions must be determined by whatever their interest happened to be at the time that they really started needing a steady income. Very likely I'll be the same way."
