HLS Letters
HLS to Lewis 8-25-44
". . . I think Carol and I will be getting married soon after I return. This is in the nature of an advance guess more than anything else. It is not official as we have not necessarily agreed upon it. I just guess it will happen. We are, however, very serious in our plans and, unless something very drastic happens, we will certainly marry sometime. We both want to and we both think we can make a successful marriage, so that about decides it.
"We have both seen a large number of unsuccessful marriages, a small number of fairly good ones, and only one or two as good as we hope ours will be. The only one of that last category, that I remember, is yours and Mother's. Hence, I want all the help and guidance I can get from your two, please.
“Here is the first question. This next is a quotation of Carol's last letter to me. I had been wondering the same thing for quite a while:
'If we marry I don't want our marriage to be like practically every one I know of. I never want to fight and I never want to lie to you. I want to help you and discuss everything with you and I want us to do everything together. I'm planning on such harmony and I only hope I'm not aiming too high.'
I hope I'm not, too. Are we?"
